Dickinson PTSA Programs is a large and visible part of the PTSA. These programs are funded and
supported by your donations at the bi-annual auction, matching funds, and by your volunteer hours.
Please help the PTSA support the kids in the way that’s right for you. It couldn’t happen without you.

Your Programs VP’s for 2011/2012 are Margo Mallicoat and Heidi Schimke.

Registration is now open for Fall 2011. Sign Up today for our great programs and activities!

Below you will find a brief outline of the upcoming programs that the PTSA provides, manages or
supports. The PTSA is looking forward to another great year of programs for the Dickinson/Explorer
community.

Programs 2011/2012

Art Smart (Arts Enrichment)
Once a month, PTSA volunteers teach each class about the use of art elements and techniques which
are supplemented with information about the great art masters and art history. One or more
volunteers per class are needed each year. There are several experienced volunteers already on
board. If you have a love for art and have 2 days per month to share please contact a Program VP!

Assemblies and Residences
The PTSA provides funding and support to bring authors, artists, and other creative people or groups
into the school for assemblies for all to enjoy.

*Big Theater
Dickinson proudly gives students grades 4-6 an opportunity to show their dramatic flair in the annual
Big Theater production. This program takes place after school and children will audition for roles. The
auditions are held in November, and the show is held mid-January. It historically has been performed
in the Redmond High School Theater and is a high quality production that everyone enjoys. This is a
volunteer based program. We are always looking for more hands for set design support, costumes,
direction of actors (crowd management), bulletin board, publicity, and concession work for the big
show just to name a few. Please look for upcoming dates for the ‘Big Theater Information Night’.

*Little Theater
Little theater is a stepping stone for the younger students and an opportunity to take part in the
theater experience. This program takes place after school and children will audition for roles. The
auditions are held in January and the show is held mid-March.We are always looking for more hands
for set design support, costumes, direction of actors (crowd management), bulletin board, publicity,
and concession work for the big show just to name a few. Please look for upcoming dates for the 'Little
Theater Information Night'.

Chess AF4C
This introduction to chess is for all Second Grade students and is part of the curriculum. Mrs. Carter is
the lead teacher for the program but each second grade teacher will teach their own students. Each
child will have the opportunity to take a small chess set home to practice with. We encourage families
who do not need the sets to send them back tot the school so that we can have them available for
another family.

*Choir
This before school program is partially funded by the PTSA. The esteemed Mr. Kelleher leads
students down a musical path in two sessions, a fall/winter session and a winter/spring
session. Each session culminates in an evening performance.

Environmental enrichment
the Nature Vision program, funded by the PTSA, brings environmental awareness to all
classrooms in 2 sessions. The sessions are taught by Nature Vision representatives during
class time as an enrichment to the curriculum.

*Extra Curricular
These programs have included: Art club, dramaKids!, Jr Chefs, Bricks4kids, and sign language
to name a few. They are all held outside of school hours, and are ‘pay-to-play’ for all students.
Offerings The PTSA manages the registration and communication for these programs, but
they are taught by outside vendors. PTSA Chaperones are required for each class to run, and
you will be required to fulfill this duty upon registering. These programs start running in October
and run throughout the year. They are generally held in portable #8 or in the main school
building. Look for registration forms and detailed descriptions for this fall’s offerings in mid
September. The PTSA is looking for a chair person to assist in registration and management of
the vendors. Please contact a Programs VP if you are interested.

*Math Clubs
Led by Carol Woodard, and supported by Pam McBain, Dickinson Math clubs are partially
funded by the PTSA and are held after school. This competitive program is open to all math
levels and will involve weekend travel to competitions.

Math Enrichment/Games
This PTSA funded, volunteer led program supports our math curriculum in the classroom
through presentations, games, puzzles etc. Math is also supported at Dickinson though “math
games nights” which are fun for everyone. If you are interested in supporting math fun in our
school please contact a Programs VP.

*Parents Night Out
This is a fairly new program to the Dickinson community. It serves 2 purposes. One is the
obvious. To give mom and dad a break! The other is that it gives organizations within the
PTSA an opportunity to raise some extra funds. For example - if math cub is going to a
competition in another city it needs funds! the parents of the children in the club can sponsor
the parents night out and receive the proceeds from that event. Contact a Programs VP for
more information.

*Reflections
Reflections is a national PTSA and Washington state PTA cultural arts competition. The
purpose of the program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by
expressing themselves through their own original works. This years theme is “Diversity is...”.
Historically the submission date has been mid-January. More details will follow as they become
available.

Science enrichment
This PTSA funded, volunteer led program supports our science curriculum during class hours
through presentations, games, puzzles etc. Science is also supported at Dickinson though the
“Science Celebration” held in March. If you are interested in supporting Science in our school
please contact a Programs VP.

Spelling Bee
Now In its second year, the spelling bee will be fun and challenging for all who participate. It will
be held in January. Watch for details coming late fall.

*registration fees may apply. Scholarships are available
