What Parents Should Do In Case of an Emergency

Below is very important information that you need to know.  Please review it and make sure anyone authorized to pick up your child is familiar with it.

After any type of emergency where the students and staff have had to evacuate the building and cannot return to inside, the following procedures will be in place.  If it is a severe emergency then the full incident command system will be in place and most likely volunteers will be needed.

You have two options when arriving at school:

1) pick up your children and leave or

2) stay and volunteer

Below are the descriptions for each.

Pick- Up Children and Leave Procedure

  • If you arrive before things are set up, please find your children and stay with them until we are set up.  It is VERY important that lyou do not leave without signing out your children.
  • Pick
    Up Children and Go Home:
    1. Go to the "Step 1: Parent Pick Up" table, and fill out the Student Release Form for each child.
    2. The school representative will verify that you are authorized to pick up the children you request.
    3. A runner will be sent to get your children
    4. Move to the "Step 2:  Wait Here" table.

Stay and Volunteeer Procudure

Check on Children/Volunteer

  1. Go straight to the "Student Status" table.  You do not need to stop at the "Parent Pick Up" station.
  2. Tell them who you are checking on (student name, grade, and teacher).
  3. They will tell you their location and status.
  4. Go to the "Volunteer" table right next to this table.  They will sign you in and assign you a team/area to help with.
  5. When you are done volunteering, please sign out and fill out a Student Release Form for each child.
  6. Note:  If you decide not to volunteer after checking the status of your children, please fill out a Student Release form for each of your children.
  7. Note: If you want to stay and help but want your children with you, please follow the "Check on Children/Volunteer" steps.  You will be assigned to help out in the Assembly Area.

Getting to School After an Emergency

  • The parking lot will be closed off to allow access only for emergency vehicles.
  • If you live close, please walk.  Traffic will be congested.
  • If you drive, please be courteious and park where there is space.
  • Please try to stay calm.
  • If it is a citywide emergency, it may be safest for you to remain where you are.  Roads may be damage and/or power lines may be down.  Please use your best judgement.

School Emergency Response System

The School has an Incident Command System which assigns all staff members to a specific team.  Each team has a list of preparation tasks, a list of suplies, and a list of jobs to do during an emergency.  Each team has a lead as well as a backup lead.

Supplies

PTSA funds emergency supplies which include food and water, first aid, emergency blankets, toiletries and sanitation, radios for communication, teacher backpacks with emergency supplies, materials to run the School Emercency Response System, and lockdown kits.  Each year we make sure the supplies are fresh and replenish those that are outdated.  Your $5 donation on the membership form helps us replenish these kits.  Contact Danna Kapacinskas with questions or to help in this effort.
